Virginia Certified Nursing Assistant Training Programs

Although certified nursing assistants (CNAs) perform the frontline functions of patient care, only a few states offer nursing assistants opportunities for professional growth.  Virginia is one state that does.  The Virginia State Board of Nursing has designed an advanced training program for certified nurse aides as they are called in the state, seeking to improve their career.  Completing the basic and advanced CNA training programs are fairly quick and inexpensive ways to become established in the field while being accorded the respect due a valued health care professional.  Earnings for certified nurse aides reflect Virginia’s high standards.  The average salaries for Virginia CNA positions posted on its popular job search website are six percent higher than those from other states nationwide according to indeed.com, ranging from approximately $23,000 to $33,000.

Diverse training opportunities await individuals wanting to become a certified nursing assistant in Virginia.  Nursing and psychiatric aides must be certified to practice.  At least 75 hours of classroom and clinical instruction in state-approved Virginia CNA training programs are needed to take the certification competency examination.  Courses cover anatomy and physiology, communication skills, infection control, nutrition, personal care and resident rights.  While Virginia does not require certification for home health care aides, the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (nahc.org) does offer certificate programs.  This voluntary certification signifies that the individual meets industry standards.  There is also an advanced training program created by the Virginia State Board of Nursing for CNAs eager to further their career.  To qualify for enrollment in advanced training, you must be certified for the last three years, be currently certified, and receive a recommendation by a licensed practical nurse or registered nurse.  Both basic and advanced training are offered in vocational and technical centers, community colleges, private schools, and some nursing care facilities.  Before selecting a particular program, research its requirements, costs, and time commitments to ensure it is right for you.

Through online programs, aspiring C.N.A.s in Arlington, Richmond, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Alexandria, Portsmouth and Hampton, Virginia may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the University of Virginia Medical Center, Saint Mary's Hospital, Lynchburg General Hospital and Inova Fairfax Hospital.
