Dialysis Tech Certification in Virginia - VA

The vital role of dialysis treatment has recently caused the federal government to establish some mandates over the profession. Previously, there was no certification requirement; however, dialysis technician certification in Virginia is now mandatory within 18 months of employment. The Board of Nephrology Examiners and Nursing Technology (BONENT) is the certifying board from whom you will test for the Certified Hemodialysis Technologist (CHT) designation.

One of the greatest benefits of this profession is that you can expect stable growth and lucrative employment options. Currently, there are an estimated 400,000 patients in need of dialysis treatment, and that number is expected to be 1.5 million by the year 2020. So, not only will you be saving patients’ lives, but you will also be involved in a career field that continues to expand.

To give you an idea of what your work day might look like, here is a typical dialysis technician job description in Virginia:

  • Operate dialysis equipment
  • Obtain patient’s vital signs
  • Explain dialysis procedures to patients
  • Inspect and troubleshoot settings on dialysis machine
  • Connect patient to dialysis machine via needle or catheter
  • Monitor patient for adverse reactions
  • Calculate fluid exchange during procedure
  • Record patient’s vital signs after procedure
