Virginia Licensed Practical Nurse Education

All nursing candidates in Virginia must first complete an approved and accredited licensed practical nurse educational training program through one of Virginia’s LPN schools.  Programs are approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing and accredited by The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.  Most LPN programs require applicants to be at least 18 years of age and have already graduated from high school or have a GED.  Applicants with a strong educational background in mathematics, biology, and anatomy will definitely have an advantage.  Familiarity with medical terminology will also prove beneficial.

LPN educational training programs offer classroom instruction in the following courses:

  • Chemistry
  • Physiology
  • Psychology
  • Nutrition
  • Physical Education
  • Child Growth and Development
  • Pharmacology

In addition, specialty courses may be offered in subjects such as medical-surgical nursing, pediatrics, obstetrics, and geriatrics.  All of these courses will academically prepare students to take and pass the NCLEX nursing examination, which is required for licensure in Virginia.

Beyond classroom instruction, LPN programs allow students to perform supervised clinical practice.  This provides essential hands-on learning experience in patient care.

There are currently no continuing education requirements for LPNs in Virginia, at least not by the state.  Employers; however, may have their own continuing education requirements.
