In order to work in the state of Virginia as a medical assistant you must have the certification to do so. In addition, receiving formal training through a Virginia medical assistant school is highly recommended. Across the nation, more and more states are requiring this certification for medical assisting professionals, proving the increased demand and need for professional standards. You can gain a certification after completing a course in medical assisting that has been accredited by the national accreditation board. The education can last from a year to two years in length and in some cases you will complete an associates degree as you complete the educational coursework in medical assisting.

Along with the classroom portion you must successfully complete a minimum of 160 hours of experiential training. You will put into practice techniques such as taking blood pressure and recording patients vital signs. Also you will experience what the day-to-day life of a certified medical assistant will be like and what pressures and demands you might face in your day. When you have completed your education through a Virginia medical assistant school and clinical steps you should then be ready to take the certification examination. Your exam will consist of questions pertaining to both the educational and clinical experiences. After passing the examination and receiving notification of your certification you can begin to look for a job in Virginia.
