Medical Billing and Coding Certification Virginia - VA

Earn your Virginia medical billing certificate and begin a rewarding career in healthcare.  Individuals who complete a minimum of a two-year medical health information curriculum can apply for certification through the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM). The CCHIIM is the oversight arm of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), a national organization of healthcare information specialists whose goal is to effectively manage personal health information. For medical billing/coding technicians, there are three types of certification: Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), and Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P). The CCA certification is the first qualification for those just getting started in the field, usually recent graduates with minimal job experience. Candidates for the CCS certification will have a more advanced skill set than those at the CCA level, including demonstrated expertise with various coding systems, and knowledge with medical terminology and the use of drug therapies. The CCS-P certification proves understanding of more advanced coding systems, and expertise in working alongside physicians in various healthcare facilities. Examination fees for certification vary from $200 to $400, depending upon the exam if the individual taking the exam is a member of AHIMA.

Many medical billing and coding specialists are members of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AACP) and the Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS). Like AHIMA, ACCP and PAHCS provide training for certification and continuing education conferences. Unlike AHIMA, ACCP and PAHCS are geared strictly to the medical billing and coding field, offering their own levels of certification and continuing education requirements.
Individuals interested in pursuing medical billing and coding certification in Virginia may contact the Virginia Health Information Management Association (VHIMA) at www.vhima.org. VHIMA is the Virginia state association of the AHIMA.
