Find the right school for you
In Virginia, the Virgina Board of Medicine requires licensure for all practicing midwives. Because midwives are responsible for the care of their patients from the beginning stages of pregnancy all the way through to the labor and delivery of the child, attending a midwifery school in Virginia is a requirement for becoming a part of this miraculous profession.
After completing your undergraduate studies, you can then begin a post-secondary midwifery program in Virginia. While your general undergraduate courses will give you more of a firm grasp of medicine and human anatomy, the post-secondary midwifery program will push you into acclimating knowledge specific to female reproduction and childbirth processes.
It is important to note that the Virginia Board of Medicine also requires registered nurse status from all midwives. So, prior to enrolling in a midwifery school in Virginia, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
In Virginia, you can expect a midwife program to last between 2 and 3 years. During that time, your coursework will include things like fetal monitoring, water birth, relaxation techniques, delivery positions, lactation, and postpartum care. The great thing is that you can take these classes online if you choose, since most midwifery schools in Virginia now have online options.
