This figure is nearly 26 percent higher than the national average for registered nurses, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In terms of cities with populations over 100,000, Alexandria and Arlington are the two most profitable cities in Virginia to work as a registered nurse. In Alexandria, registered nurses make an average of $79,000 a year, and they make $78,000 per year in Arlington.

Becoming a Registered Nurse in Virginia

Prospective registered nurses in Virginia must first complete an application for licensure, which can be found at http://www.dhp.virginia.gov/nursing/nursing_forms.htm#RN. From the link, select Application and Instructions for Licensure by Examination as a Registered Nurse.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Complete a four-year high school course, or an equivalent program as decided by the proper educational agency.
  • Have a degree or diploma from one of the approved professional Virginia RN programs.
  • Pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). This written exam was created by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), which oversees the exam for state nursing boards. The exam is supposed to test the skills, abilities, and knowledge that are crucial to proper and safe entry-level nursing practices.
  • Be free of previous actions that can be cause for disciplinary action by the Virginia Board of Nursing (VBN).

Note: The VBN may also endorse an applicant to receive a license to practice professional nursing if the applicant has been licensed as a registered nurse in another state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory. In this instance, the applicant must meet the requirements for registered nurses in Virginia. Also, the VBN may also provide a license to nurses who carry an unrestricted license in Canada, provided that they received their training in a Canadian nursing school that speaks English as its primary language, and the applicant has passed the Canadian Registered Nurses Examination (CRNE).

License Renewal

Registered nurses will be up for license renewal every two years in Virginia. The VBN will mail a renewal application to all registered nurses in the state when they are up for renewal. Licensees must provide the information that is requested and submit the form to the VBN. There will be a renewal fee involved.
All licensees who permit their license to expire can be reinstated by the VBN once there is acceptable evidence that they have paid the renewal fee and are ready to resume practice competently.
