LPN Educational Requirements in Washington

Potential licensed practical nurses (LPN) in the state of Washington can prepare academically as early as high school.  The most beneficial high school preparatory courses are math, biology, chemistry, and anatomy.  Becoming familiar with medical terminology will also prove beneficial prior to nursing school. 

Upon graduation from high school or obtaining a GED and being at least 18 years of age, students can apply to training programs offered through Washington’s LPN schools.  These programs are offered by most colleges (community, technical, and major universities) and some hospitals.  An accredited LPN training program is required for all LPNs in Washington prior to becoming licensed and typically can be completed in one year. 

LPN educational training programs in Washington will consist of instruction the classroom as well as hand-on experience in supervised clinical practice.  Subject matter covered will include, but is not limited to anatomy, nutrition, first-aid, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, physiology, and psychology. 

At this time, no continuing education is required for LPNs by the Washington State Department of Health Nursing Commission. 

Through comprehensive training programs, aspiring LPNs in Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane and Bellevue, Washington may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the University of Washington Medical Center, Swedish Medical Center, Sacred Heart Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center.
