How to Become a Medical Technician in Washington

Board certification is not required for medical laboratory technicians in Washington state. National associations offer certification for medical technicians who have graduated from accredited online or campus based Washington medical technician schools. National organizations providing certification include the American Medical Technologists, the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the American Association of Bioanalysts. Before beginning the journey of becoming a medical technician peruse these national certification organizations on the web. Then look for schools that are recognized by a national certification organization, for example, the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.  Once schools that have approved medical tech programs are found, it is time to contact admissions personnel to learn more about the program.

The last step to becoming a medical tech is to become certified. After graduating from the medical tech program, graduates will be eligible to apply and sit for the national certification examination. Currently, national certification as a medical lab technician is offered by the American Association of Bioanalysts, MLT (AAB); the American Society of Clinical Pathology, MLT (ASCP); the American Medical Technologists, MLT (AMT); and the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, MLT (NAACLS).
