In order to gain Washington nursing informatics certification, health care professionals must first pass a national competency examination. National competency examinations in nursing informatics are administered by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Eligibility requirements for certification include:
1) registered nurse license and related work experience thereof (ANCC)
2) baccalaureate degree or higher in nursing (ANCC)
3) baccalaureate degree in associated information and management system and work experience thereof partially focusing on health care (HIMSS)
4) completion of at least thirty hours of continuing education (ANCC)
5) previous supervised practical training in nurse informatics (ANCC). If all eligibility criteria have been satisfied, individuals will need to complete and submit an application for certification through either the HIMSS or the ANCC. If an application is approved, the applicant must then pass a national competency examination, after which a professional certificate is awarded.
