As the field of nurse informatics is still a relatively newer profession, students may have a difficult time finding on-campus Washington nursing informatics programs. Therefore, students are encouraged to research online universities and web-based distance learning programs that award diplomas, certificates and degrees in nurse informatics. Remember, the HIMSS and the ANCC both require at least a baccalaureate degree prior to gaining certification. Individuals that take advantage of online resources and graduate from an accredited nurse informatics program could earn a variety of certificates and degrees including, but not limited to: Health Care Informatics Certificate, Bachelor in Computer Information Systems-Healthcare Information, Master of Science in Nursing-Informatics, and Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing. Admittedly, specific curriculum requirements will vary between each nurse informatics program; however all programs will provide instruction on similar aspects of nurse informatics theory. Some examples of the types of coursework expected in nurse informatics include: Informatics in Nursing and Health Care, Information and Knowledge Management, Health Care Information Technology, Health Care Organization and Delivery Systems, and Concepts of Health Care Informatics.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Nurses in Health Informatics in Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane and Bellevue, Washington may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the University of Washington Medical Center, Swedish Medical Center, Sacred Heart Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center.
