There are two different types of educational routes for radiologic technologists in the state of Washington. The first is to complete an educational program that is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), which will allow the student to sit for the certification examination for radiologic technologists, administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). These programs are typically housed in two year, four year, or teaching hospitals. These programs will lead to a certificate, an associate’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree. There are a handful of Washington radiology technician schools as well as a large variety of online options available.
The second route is an alternate education route. This route requires that the student complete a minimum of four years of supervised clinical supervised practice experience in radiography. In addition to this clinical experience, the student must perform additional coursework. Some course content may be obtained during the clinical experience. Examples of this type of content include medical terminology, methods of patient care, radiographic procedures, and medical ethics and law. The student must also complete some content in a formal education setting. This coursework includes human anatomy and physiology, principles of radiographic exposure, and radiation physics and safety.
In addition, in the state of Washington, a candidate for licensure must complete seven hours of AIDS education training. This can be done as a self-study, through direct patient care, or through formal education.
Through campus or online programs, aspiring Radiology Technicians in Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane and Bellevue, Washington may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the University of Washington Medical Center, Swedish Medical Center, Sacred Heart Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center.
