Like most professions, education is important well after gaining employment. By keeping abreast of the industry’s latest procedures, techniques, instruments and patient care information, ultrasound technicians assure both employers and clients of their dedication and ambition to provide the best quality service possible. One way that ultrasound technicians in Washington show their range and marketability is through further education in a specialized field of ultrasound. Some of the most common areas of certification specialization include the cardiac, nervous system, abdomen, vascular and breast.

For registered ultrasound technicians, continuing medical education (CME) credits are actually required by national certification boards in order to maintain certification or apply for recertification. CME credits can be acquired through the specific certification agency where registration was originally administered. Continuing education can take many forms, including laboratory workshops, seminars, self-instructional manuals, online examinations, hospital volunteerism and on the job supervised training.

Ultrasound technicians nationwide must complete some type of formal training/education program to qualify for employment. Although training requirements vary, employers in Washington generally request at least one of the following:

  • 1-year vocational certificate
  • 2-year associate’s degree
  • 4-year bachelor’s degree
  • Externship
  • Accredited online program

By completing programs through either campus based or online schools, aspiring sonographers in Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma, and Spokane, Washington will be prepared to secure jobs at some of the best hospitals in the state including Swedish Medical Center, Sacred Heart Medical Center, the University of Washington Medical Center,  and Harborview Medical Center.
