All licensed practical nurses (LPN) in West Virginia must complete an LPN educational training program prior to becoming licensed. Most LPN programs require candidates to have graduated from high school or have a GED and be at least 18 years old. Prerequisites such as instruction in mathematics, biology, and chemistry may be required. In addition, some programs offered by LPN schools in West Virginia require aspiring students to pass an entrance examination.
LPN training programs in West Virginia are offered through technical and community colleges, four-year colleges and universities, and by some hospitals and medical institutions. Typically a licensed practical nurse can complete training within one year. Training will include classroom instruction with major emphasis on science courses and hands-on clinical opportunities that provide students with practical experience to apply what they have learned.
The state of West Virginia requires all LPNs to complete at least 24 contact hours of continuing education and engage in 400 clock hours of LPN practice every two years. Additionally, they will be required to complete a one time, two contact hour course for end of life care, including instruction in pain management.
Through comprehensive training programs, aspiring LPNs in Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg and Wheeling, West Virginia may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital, Wheeling Hospital, Saint Mary's Medical Center and Ruby Memorial Hospital.
