Medical Billing and Coding Certification in West Virginia

Medical billing and coding certification in West Virginia is not a requirement for employment in the field. Nevertheless, obtaining certification is a plus for those who wish to increase their pay or receive promotions. Medical billers and coders are not hindered by a medical licensing board in West Virginia, allowing them the freedom to pursue medical billing and coding certification at their own pace. However, one needs to have worked in the field for a minimum of two years or have completed a two-year accredited medical billing and coding program before he or she will be allowed to take the basic exam for a West Virginia medical billing certificate.

Three organizations provide certification opportunities. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS) and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AACP) all offer similar certification examinations.
Depending on which association an individual joins, he or she can certify on up to three levels of proficiency. The first is a basic exam that tests an individual’s understanding of the field, and is usually taken by newly graduated students. As a biller or coder learns new coding systems and gains expertise in medical terminology, he can certify at an intermediate level. At the top of the certification ladder are those who have attained employment in a hospital working with a physician and have excelled with more complicated coding systems.
For more information on obtaining certification in West Virginia, candidates may inquire with one of the featured schools or visit the West Virginia Health Information Management Association (AHIMA’s West Virginia branch) at www.wvhima.org.
