Certificate Programs and Degree Options

West Virginia medical transcription schools have programs that terminate with a certificate and with an associate’s degree. Most of the time a certificate program can be expected to last around 9 to 12 months; an associate’s degree 2 years. Both of these programs are sufficient to the medical transcriptionist in West Virginia. However, you will want to be sure that the degree option you choose is recognized by the AHDI. The alignment with the AHDI is perhaps the most important aspect of your schooling.

AHDI Certifications

The AHDI has two different types of certification for medical transcriptionists: the registered medical transcriptionist (RMT) and the certified medical transcriptionist (CMT). After your schooling is completed, you will then be eligible to take the RMT test. The fee for this test is $200, and it is only open to students that have completed a medical transcription program. Remember, most employers will not hire you without the minimum of an RMT title.

The CMT title is only for transcriptionists who have experience in acute care reports. In fact, you must have worked at least 2 years in such an environment before you can even take this test. The fee for the CMT test is $275.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Transcriptionists in Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg and Wheeling, West Virginia may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital, Wheeling Hospital, Saint Mary's Medical Center and Ruby Memorial Hospital.
