West Virginia Pharmacy Tech School – WV

According to IDcide.com, a vast majority of the communities in West Virginia have an average age higher than the rest of the country.  This is good news if you want to be a pharmacy technician.  As a population ages it is more likely to need a greater number of regular medications, translating into more positions available for professionals to provide these medications.  The expected job growth through 2016 supports this, calling for a 32% increase in the number of available positions as a pharmacy technician in West Virginia according to indeed.com.  West Virginia calls for paid work to be performed prior to graduating from a certification program, allowing you to begin working immediately while attending online classes through West Virginia pharmacy technician schools.  West Virginia’s laws regarding certification are somewhat relaxed; the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy (WVBP) does not require a state-specific test.

Continuing Education Requirements for a Pharmacy Technician in West Virginia

West Virginia has simple rules regarding recertification.  A pharmacy technician must recertify their license every two years.  In that two-year period, the pharmacy technician must complete twenty (20) hours of continuing education units.  Up to 10 hours can be provided by simply working under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.  Other options available to a pharmacy technician seeking continuing education units are taking classes at a college or university; taking a program offered by a professional pharmacy association such as the National Pharmacy Technicians Association; or completing an accredited pharmacy training course.   The preferred association for completing continuing education units in West Virginia is the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists.  While programs and classes offered by other entities may be approved after review, only those provided by the ASCP will automatically be accepted.  Certified pharmacy technicians who aggressively pursue continuing education often find themselves in line for early advancement to a supervisory or mentoring position and a higher salary.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Pharmacy Techs in Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg and Wheeling, West Virginia may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital, Wheeling Hospital, Saint Mary's Medical Center and Ruby Memorial Hospital.
