Wisconsin educational guidelines for licensed practical nurses (LPN) are similar to those of other states. Preparation for a career in the medical field can begin as early as high school by taking course in math, algebra, biology, chemistry, and anatomy. Some high schools even offer vocational courses in nursing. Wisconsin only requires two years of high school to be completed, so it may be possible to begin a nursing program while still finishing high school. In addition to a high school education, becoming familiar with medical terminology is encouraged.

The educational training of a practical nurse will take two forms: classroom instruction and clinical experience. Classroom instruction will include courses in physiology, pharmacology, psychology, nutrition, and first-aid, to name a few. Clinical experience gives students the opportunity to put their academic and medical knowledge into play by providing hands-on experience, under the supervision of a licensed medical professional, to real patients.
