The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) administers Wisconsin nursing informatics certification through examination. Before even applying for certification, health care professionals must first complete the following eligibility requirements:
- Must hold a current license as a registered nurse with at least two years of work experience as a registered nurse.
- Must hold a baccalaureate in degree in nursing, or higher level of formal education in a related field from an accredited school or program.
- Must show proof of having completed a minimum of 30 hours dedicated to continuing education in informatics.
- Must have at least 1,000 hours of practical experience in nursing informatics, or 2,000 hours of practical experience in nursing informatics and 12 hours of completed academic credits in a nursing informatics graduate program, or completion of an nursing informatics program consisting of a minimum of 200 hours of supervised practical experience in nursing informatics.
Once qualifying criteria is achieved, individuals must obtain and submit an “Informatics Nursing Certification Application” through the ANCC. After the application has been approved, a national competency examination in nursing informatics must be successfully passed. Upon passing examinations, the ANCC will grant certification. Initial certification fees range from $270 to $390, depending on membership affiliation with the ANA or ANI. Certification remains active for five years, at which time renewal will be necessary to maintain certification.
