Pharmacy Technician Certification in Wisconsin - WI

How to Become a Pharmacy Technician in Wisconsin

1. Earn a diploma or degree from an accredited Wisconsin pharmacy technician certification program through conventional campus-based institutions or online schools.
2. National Certification is optional.

National certification is optional for Pharmacy Technicians in Wisconsin. One path to certification is to take the certification exam administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. In order to qualify to take the exam, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent. They also must be 18 yrs of age or older and have had not felony convictions in the last five years.  The exam is available to be taken all year at many Pearson VUE computer testing sites around the state. The test has 90 questions that are multiple choice style. Areas of content that are included on the test are assisting the Pharmacist, Maintaining Medications and Inventory Control, and Administration and Management of Pharmacy Practice.

Another option for gaining certification is to take an exam through the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians. This exam is a 110-question test that is also a multiple choice style exam

Re-Certification
Regardless of the path taken to get certification, it is imperative to maintain that certification. Every two years Pharmacy Technicians are required to renew their certification with the examination site that handled their original certification. They must provide proof of attendance at a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education. It is stipulated that of the 20 hours of CE, at least one hour must be dedicated to pharmacy law. Recertification also involves the payment of a renewal fee.

Professional Associations
The Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin (PSW) is an association for the pharmacy profession. They have a Technician Section that has its own Board and Bylaws. The two groups work together to further the profession of Pharmacy Technician. In Feb. 2009 the PSW Technician Credentialing Taskforce made several recommendations to the PSW Board of Directors. The recommendations for Pharmacy Technicians include:

      1. Requirements for becoming a Pharmacy Technician
        1. Minimum age of 18
        2. High school diploma or GED
        3. Criminal background check

2. Requiring all Pharmacy Technicians to be credentialed by the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing

Additional recommendations include allowing the certification of pharmacy technicians in Wisconsin to continue to be voluntary. They also recommended that formal education through an accredited program remain a voluntary action.

Other associations that are related to Pharmacy Technicians in WI include the American Association of Pharmacy Technicians and the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, Inc.
