The long-term health care industry has many different career paths for students interested in entering this field. Along with nursing home administrators, certified nursing assistants, and nurse’s aides, one lesser-known professional segment of long-term care is Life Care Planning. Long term care educational facilities in Wyoming and online offer Pre-certification programs that prepare you to become a Certified Life Care Planners (CLCP). The training will give you the knowledge you need to take the certification exam that completes your training education. The International Commission on Health Care Certification is the organization that administers the exam (http://ichcc.org).

The educational requirements for the programs in Wyoming are as follows:

  • A minimum of 120 hours of post-graduate or post-specialty degree training in life care planning or other appropriate area specific to the development of a life care plan.
  • Life Care Planning Methodology (16 hours)
  • Catastrophic Case Management
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Module.
  • Legal education in life care planning including onsite testimony/trial experience.
  • 3 years of approved and documented field experience

In addition you must meet one of the following components:

  • Submit one life care plan authored by you personally.
  • One year with a Certified Life Care Planner including specific documentation requirements.
  • Graduation from an accredited training program, including a practicum or internship for a CLCP.

Programs for long-term health education can be completed at local Wyoming colleges and universities in major cities such as Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette and Rock Springs. Many programs are also available online.
