A practical nurse in Wyoming can begin preparing for a medical career by taking courses in high school that emphasize math and science.  Becoming familiar with medical terminology is also encouraged.  In addition, volunteering or working part-time in a medical facility will provide invaluable experience and training.

Educational programs offered by Wyoming’s LPN schools can typically be completed in a year or less for full-time students.  Such programs are offered by junior and community colleges, technical and vocational schools, and even hospitals.

Two primary forms of educational training occur in a LPN program:  classroom instruction and clinical practice in patient care.  Classroom instruction will include the following courses: anatomy, biology, chemistry, psychology, pharmacology, nutrition, and physical education.  Specialty courses may also be taken in areas such as obstetrics, pediatrics, and geriatrics.    Clinical practice occurs in hospitals or other medical facilities and allows students valuable hands-on learning opportunities under the supervision of licensed medical personnel.

The Wyoming Board of Nursing has very specific continuing education requirements for licensed practical nurses.  This includes a certain number of contact hours and nursing practice to be completed every two years for license renewal.

Through comprehensive programs, aspiring LPNs in Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette and Rock Springs, Wyoming may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Campbell County Memorial Hospital, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, Saint John's Medical Center and Wyoming Medical Center.
