Wyoming Medical Transcription Training Programs
Qualified students can become a Medical Transcriptionist in one to two years, depending on the program for medical transcription training in Wyoming. The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI; previously called the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists) serves as an accrediting body and gives guidelines regarding the content of comprehensive curriculum. Many programs are either completely online or have several classes available online. Other programs have a mix of online and classroom-based courses.
Steps to Become a Medical Transcriptionist in Wyoming
A high school degree is required for admission into most programs. Once students have fulfilled the requirements for the certificate, degree or diploma from a technical school, online school, or other educational entity, they can take the Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) examination. This exam, which is administered by the AHDI, assesses the students’ knowledge and understanding of medical terms, procedures, and practices, as well as their skill at transcribing accurately and efficiently. Once students pass the exam, they earn their credential as a Registered Medical Transcriptionist. To keep their credential current, they must pass an online exam every three years and pay a renewal fee.
Registered Medical Transcriptionists (Level 1 professional designation) can become Certified Medical Transcriptionists (Level 2 designation) by qualifying with the appropriate experience and successful completion of another examination. The work experience must include a minimum of two years in an acute-care (hospital) setting that provides interaction with various types of doctors (for example, different specialties and foreign language speakers), familiarity with different formats and report styles, and experience with surgery dictation. Becoming a Certified Medical Transcriptionist confirms their knowledge and experience and enhances employment opportunities. Like the RMT, the CMT credential must be renewed on a three-year cycle. Recertification for the CMT credential includes earning at least 30 continuing education units in addition to remittance of a renewal fee.
