Wyoming Pharmacy Tech Certificate โ€“ WY

How to Become a Pharmacy Technician in Wyoming

1. Complete an educational program.

Finding work as a Pharmacy Technician in Wyoming, can be achieved through a couple of different avenues:  Pursue an education by attending one of a number of Wyoming pharmacy technician certification programs offered online or through campus based schools.  However, it is becoming increasingly common for people to begin their education online. The campus schools are located throughout the state to make it easier for anyone interested in attending a program. There is also the decision of earning a diploma, certificate or Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree, again depending on the program that is attended.

The other option available if you want to work as a Pharmacy Technician in Wyoming is to work at a pharmacy to gain enough experience to then take the national certification exam. There is no number of hours specified to sit for the exam, but obviously the more experience, the better the chances of passing the exam.

2. Take and successfully pass a National Certification Exam for Pharmacy Technicians.
Wyoming requires the certification of Pharmacy Techs. There are two organizations that offer a national exam: The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB www.PTCB.org) and the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (www.nationaltechexam.org) The criteria for taking the exam through the PTCB  is having a high school diploma or GED, have no felony convictions of any kind for the past 5 years and never having had any pharmacy related felony convictions. Also, a candidate cannot have had their credentials denied, suspended, revoked or restricted by any state Pharmacy Regulatory agency.

This exam is a 90 question multiple choice style exam. The test is offered throughout the year at the many Pearson VEU Professional Centers located around the country. To find the site nearest your location in WY, look at the PTCB exam site webpage noted above.

Unsuccessful candidates can retake the exam up to three times. For the first and second retake, the candidate must wait 60 before re-attempting the test. Candidates must wait 6 months before writing the exam for the third retake.

Once successful in passing the exam, pharmacy technicians can use the title of CPhT โ€“ Certified Pharmacy Technician.

Taking an exam through the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) is similar, but not identical to the other exam. To be eligible to sit for this exam a Wyoming based candidate must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED. There can be no conviction of a felony on their record. This test is offered at LaserGrade Testing Centers, of which there are several in Wyoming. The test is a 110 question, multiple choice style examination. Some of the material covered on this exam includes controlled substances, laws and regulations, drug classifications, dispensing processes. Successful candidates are recognized as Certified Pharmacy Technicians.

Unsuccessful test takers must wait 4 weeks before retaking the exam.

3. Apply to the WY State Board of Pharmacy

After successfully passing the certification exam, the WY Pharmacy Board (www.pharmacyboard.state.wy.us) needs to be contacted to obtain an application packet to be completed and submitted for licensure.
