In 2005, there were 5,573 licenses issued to Registered Nurses in Wyoming according to the Wyoming Board of Nursing. Just under half of all Wyoming nurses work in hospitals according to the Wyoming Healthcare Commission. Other areas include long-term care facilities, schools, private agencies and more. Nurses in Wyoming work in rural areas and some larger cities. Although Wyoming is the least populated of all States in the United States, there are opportunities for individuals seeking a career in nursing. Wyoming like other states has increasing needs for nurses, especially in community and home healthcare settings.
Registered Nurse Education in Wyoming
There are a handful of Board approved nursing programs offered by online and campus based Wyoming RN schools. Nursing education consists of Associate degree nursing programs at two-year colleges, which includes coursework and clinical training in preparation for the NCLEX-RN examination. Nursing students take general education coursework in biology, chemistry, psychology, and nursing practice specific coursework as well. Another option is to obtain a bachelors of science in nursing from a four year of college leading concurrently with a registered nursing degree. Registered nurses who have an associate’s degree can obtain a bachelors degree by successfully completing required coursework. Registered nurses also have the option of obtaining postgraduate advanced education in nursing, by obtaining a nurse practitioner degree in Wyoming.
Through campus or online programs, aspiring Registered Nurses in Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette and Rock Springs, Wyoming may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Campbell County Memorial Hospital, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, Saint John's Medical Center and Wyoming Medical Center.
