Acupuncture Studies in Iowa - IA

In Iowa, acupuncturists are licensed by the Iowa Board of Medicine. Medical doctors and dentists are licensed to practice with no additional certification required -- though they will likely want classes to hone their skills.  Acupuncturists are also allowed to practice, with some additional requirements.  As for the lay practitioner… Iowa is one of many states that requires NCCAOM certification for licensing as an acupuncturist.

Students must complete 1,490 hours of studies before taking board exams in oriental medicine foundations, acupuncture, and biomedicine.  The total certification program is completed over the course of several years. An approved education  includes required hours in theory, clinic training, and issues in ethics and communication. Students learn needle placement as well as specialty treatments which may include heat and moxa (herbs) to stimulate circulation.

In Iowa, acupuncturists are lifelong learners, who continue to take classes after certification. Continuing acupuncture training in Iowa is necessary to maintain licensure.  Fortunately, there are many options which can help the practitioner develop personal interests as well as serve others. An acupuncturist can receive credits for serving as an exam item writer and/ or serving needy populations in a pro bono capacity.  CPR training is an ongoing requirement, as it is necessary to keep emergency skills and procedures fresh.
