Midwifery education programs teach students much more than how to deliver a baby. While the historical job of a midwife often consisted of a woman who was employed by a poor family to assist at a home birth, the more modern midwife does much more. A midwife in Alabama will often be considered a woman’s general health practitioner. She will provide services to the woman prior to the birth and for long years after. Many of these programs are available in a distance learning format or online school. Others can often be found at local colleges in cities such as Birmingham, Huntsville and Montgomery.

The coursework in your program will teach you everything you need to know about prenatal care for the mother and child. It will also train you in the birthing process as well as hospital procedures and protocol.
