Midwifery School in Arkansas - AR

These days, many women are looking beyond typical OB/GYN care when preparing to have a family. Many are seeking alternatives that are less costly and that offer more natural options for delivery. In years past, one of the options that most people used was home delivery--often assisted by a midwife.

Arkansas allows licensed Lay Midwives to assist in home births. The mother is required to visit a physician at an established health clinic twice during her pregnancy, and must record a “back-up plan? with Arkansas State Health Department in case of an emergency. However, the scope of practice for certified nurse-midwives (CNM) is much different, and the educational path they take is also much different.

A certified nurse-midwife will need to be competent in many areas of health. The Midwifery courses in Arkansas will cover both general and specific healthcare. Because, as a certified nurse midwife you will work with a woman in her childbearing years and beyond, CNMs are trained to work with women of various ages.  Some of the topics covered in midwifery school include:

  • Providing prenatal and postpartum care
  • Performing physical assessment for OB/GYN patients, including yearly exams
  • Family planning
  • Diaphragm fitting
  • IUD removal/insertion
  • Provide counseling and education
  • Healthcare procedures and practices
