Arkansas Healthcare Informatics School - AR
According to the ANCC, there are 11 Arkansas nursing informatics programs. At first, the courses at the beginning of the program may be very similar to courses taught for other IT technical students. However, more advanced classes may concentrate on the application of information management and technology to the health care industry. Do not feel limited to just the Arkansas nursing informatics programs as there are a variety of online options available in this field.
A nurse informatics program should prepare professionals for the ANCC exam. System Life Cycles, Information Management, and IT are the three main parts of the certification test and constitute 98 out of 150 of the questions on the exam. Some of the more specific areas of study within these practice domains are system planning, analysis, design, implementation and support. The IT portion is especially critical, as it truly sets informatics apart from other registered nurses. Under IT training informatics must learn about computer software and hardware, communication networks, network security, and data analysis. However, some of the lower represented practice domains on the exam are also important. For example, there will only be 10 questions on human factors, but it is critical for nurse informatics to understand how patients will interact to different medical devices involved in their treatments and recovery. There will only be 15 questions on management and leadership skills, but these skills could offer higher-paying, upper-level opportunities for nurses with informatics training that other registered nurses simply do not have.
