Since New Jersey does not license the occupation of diagnostic medical sonographer, one must be able to be competitive in this job market. In order to separate yourself, you can earn the registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) credential. Once again, this is administered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). The following steps are referencing the process to obtaining this voluntary credential. The ARDMS website has a prerequisite path reference guide to aid you in the application process. There are currently 9 prerequisite paths. Depending on your prerequisite path, certain documentation is required. Examples include a copy of transcripts, as well as formal letters. At this time, you may complete the online application and pay the application fee. The next step would be to register for the examinations. The first examination is the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination. Also, you must pass a specialty examination within the RMDS credential.
