Obtaining your high school diploma or G.E.D. is always a smart choice, no matter what you plan to do in life. It's a valuable asset you will be glad to have. In order to pursue a career as an ultrasound technician in New Mexico, a high school diploma is the absolute minimum requirement that you must complete before you can proceed. Once you're done with high school, you want to enroll in and graduate from an accredited training program. The classes and clinical experience will give you the skills to become a well-trained ultrasound technician. These training programs can easily be found at community colleges, universities, hospitals and online. You will want to get you associate's degree, but if you desire further education, there are higher degree programs available. You can complete an associate's degree in 18-24 months.

Congratulations! You're a college grad! Now you need board certification. This means you have graduated from an ultrasound technician course and have the clinical experience to prove your competency. You will need to submit documentation of this, as well as an application, fee per exam ($200) and set a date to take the exams. You must take three exams to earn basic credentials. Other credentials and specialties are available and require separate exams. Certification is given by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (http://www.ardms.org/). Maintaining your credentials requires an annual fee and 30 continuing education credits every three years.
