Becoming an Ultrasound Technician in North Dakota - ND

First, you will need to finish your high school education or obtain a G.E.D. This is a priceless tool and a key to your future success. In this day and age, employers will want to see this, as will any school you choose to attend for post-secondary education. In North Dakota, a 12th grade education or equivalent is the minimum requirement you must meet before you can begin to pursue your future career as an ultrasound technician.

Next, you'll need to enroll in an accredited sonography training program and obtain your degree. These types of programs can be found at community colleges, technical/vocational schools, hospitals, universities, and even through online education programs. The course can usually be completed in about 2 years. There are some shorter certificate programs, but typically, the minimum requirement of most employers in North Dakota is an associate's degree. For those who wish for more education or aspire to advancement later in their career, there are higher degrees available as well.

Once you have graduated from an accredited ultrasound technician training program, you will need to become a board certified ultrasound technician. Certification is offered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography ( You will need to submit an application and fee ($200 per exam), submit documentation of your education and clinical experience, and schedule a time to take the exam. You will be required to pass three basic exams and will have to take more exams, should you choose to specialize in any area(s).
