Becoming a Lactation Consultant in New Mexico – NM

Lactation consultants in New Mexico can become certified through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is one who has specialized skills to assist mothers and families with competent and comprehensive lactation and breastfeeding information and instruction. Lactation consultants work with mothers to prevent and solve problems common to breastfeeding.  These professionals cooperate with other health care professionals to provide comprehensive care to the mother and baby, as well as education to promote breastfeeding as a healthy choice for newborns.

Beginning in 2012, first-time candidates must have completed their education and clinical practice prior to applying for the certification exam. These requirements include 90 hours of education in human lactation and breastfeeding.  Candidates for certification must also be registered or licensed health professionals who have completed the education courses and clinical breastfeeding practice hours.

Certified lactation consultants must recertify every five years by completing 75 hours of continuing education through conferences, classes, and/or self-study programs that enable consultants to stay current with research and new information. Of the 75 hours, 50 must be lactation specific, 5 must be on the topic of ethics, and the remaining 20 can be a combination of lactation-specific, ethics, or general health-related information. Every ten years, lactation consultants must recertify by taking a recertification exam.
