Becoming a Lactation Consultant in Virginia – VA

If you were interested in pursuing a professional position as a lactation consultant it would behoove you to learn all you can about obtaining lactation consultant certification in Virginia.  The main avenue of certification for this profession is the internationally recognized exam given by the International Board of Lactation Consultants Examiners (IBLCE).

At this point in time there are no requirements for existing licensure in an existing healthcare field as a prerequisite to becoming a lactation consultant or for sitting for the certification exam given by the IBLCE, however there are requirements for specific degrees that must be earned before one can qualify to become certified as a lactation consultant in Virginia. 

There is a movement to qualify and furnish schools and universities with the curriculum to offer degrees specifically in lactation consulting.  Once these schools are in place to offer these degrees and specialized training it will become more and more important to seek a degree in this field with the degree being the norm and/or requirement, not the exception.  This requirement will, in the future be coupled with an alternative option for those already holding a license in the healthcare field.
