The state of California does not require licensure for its dental assistants. However, an RDA (Registered Dental Assistant) credential is available to those who have obtained either a certificate or degree from an approved dental assistant program, or those who have at least 12 months of fulltime work experience in this field. California Dental Assistant Associations

  1. Department of Consumer Affairs: Dental Hygiene Committee of CA – The Health and Safety of consumers is the primary focus of this group. They handle the licensing for dental hygienists in California. The Dental Board of California regulates the licensure of all dentists and dental assistants.
  2. California Dental Association – This group’s purpose is to offer support for members, who consist of those in the dental industry, through education.
