California Pharmacy Tech School – CA

Becoming a Pharmacy Technician in the state of California is a very prosperous and rewarding career choice.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) suggests consistent growth of this industry in the state of California, especially for those with a formal degree.  The Pharmacy Tech career field in California is expected to keep rising by more than 27% by 2014.  California is a state where many citizens are health conscience, and maintain generally healthy lives, but there is also a very large population and generation that is rapidly reaching older age, and will be adding to the total expansion of the Pharmaceutical industry in California in the immediate future.  There are currently a little over 27,400 Pharmacy Technicians in the state of California, with an average salary of $36,100 annually.   In California pharmacy technician schools are ramping up for increased enrollment to meet the expected growth in this vital profession in the coming years.

Continuing Education Credit (CEC) requirements for Pharmacy Technicians in California

By law a Pharmacy Technician in California must renew their license every 2 years, by completing 30 hours of continued education (1.25 hrs. per month).  (CE) must be related to the practice of a Pharmacy, and acquired by a reputable provider that is recognized by either the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or the Pharmacy Foundation of California (PFC).  If the (CE) course is not accredited by one of those two agencies, you can petition for (CE) credit by submitting a “Pharmacists Petition for Continuing Education Credit from A Non-Recognized Provider�? form and a fee of $40 per hour of course work.  For this type of submission to be complete you must include a copy of the completion certificate, a copy of the course brochure or advertisement, and a copy of the course outline. 

There are only a few exemption possibilities.  New licensees are exempt from having to earn (CE) credits for their first renewal cycle.  Pharmacy Techs that are enrolled as full time students in a health professions schools may also be exempt from (CE).  There also exists the option for exemption due to emergency or hardship suffered.  It is important to contact the Board for any additional information regarding these types of exemptions, for they must be submitted to the Board in writing, and accompanied by supportive proof, and documentation.

The Board randomly audits renewal applications in California, so Pharmacy Techs are required by law to retain their (CE) completion certificates for 4 years.  If you’re randomly selected for an audit, they will notify you, and you’ll be asked to submit copies of your (CE) completion certificates to the Board.  All of this information and much more concerning what it takes to become a Pharmacy Technician in the state of California can be found here at this website,
