In terms of education, there are many ways that you can obtain the necessary knowledge and skill set that you will need to become a sonographer in California. You should pursue one of the California ultrasound technician schools that has been accredited by the CAAHEP. The CAAHEP has 150 accredited training programs in the United States, including many in California. There are some hospital programs that fall under this accreditation category, as well as many universities and colleges.

  • One-year training programs usually come with a vocational certificate. While these programs are not CAAHEP-accredited, they may be accepted by employers as sufficient education for those who have preexisting experience in the field of medicine.
  • Two-year sonography programs typically result in an associate’s degree. These are the most commonly accredited sonography programs.
  • There are also four-year bachelor’s degree programs for sonographers that are accredited by the CAAHEP.

  • For a one-year program, applicants must be qualified in an allied health profession that is clinically related to sonography.
  • For a two-year program, applicants must have a high school or GED diploma and have a background in the areas of general physics, algebra, and basic science. They must also be competent at a college level in the areas of general physics, algebra, communication skills, and biological science. Critical thinking, active listening, active learning, instructional skills, reading comprehension, written expression, oral expression, learning strategies, and social perceptiveness are desired skills for two-year degree applicants.

Traditional curricula in college and university sonography programs includes courses in image evaluation, instrumentation, ultrasound applications, clinical medicine, patient care, biological sciences, physical sciences, and diagnostic procedures.
