Cardiac Sonography Training in Arkansas - AR

The majority of cardiac sonography training programs in Arkansas span two years, enabling students to pursue an associate degree. While there are some certificate programs that run shorter, the preference is for the more comprehensive training and in the future, a bachelor’s degree may become the preferred standard, according to some. Those interested in a cardiac sonographer career should look for training available in Arkansas that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP) or the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS).

To perform their job, a cardiac sonographer must understand cardiovascular and thoracic anatomy, as well as cardiovascular pathophysiology.  Therefore, the basic requirements of a cardiac sonographer program typically include a minimum of one semester of college algebra, human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and introductory physics. English, speech or communications courses are mandatory and students are also expected to have completed standard coursework in patient care.

During the typical training program, courses include foundations of echocardiography, cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, adult echocardiography, special cardiovascular procedures, echocardiographic application, ultrasound physics, stress echocardiography, and an introduction to vascular and congenital heart disease.

During clinical rotations, students will work under the supervision of highly qualified cardiologists, cardiac sonographers and registered nurses. Hospitals throughout Arkansas, such as the North Arkansas Regional Medical Center and White County Medical Center, offer opportunities for clinical rotations.
