Cardiac Sonography Training in Hawaii - HI

Cardiac sonography training in Hawaii typically encompasses a two-year program that leads to an associate’s degree, either through a community college or via an online distance learning school. Some may choose to enroll in a cardiac sonography program after they have finished a bachelor’s degree in another area of healthcare, such as nursing.

Basic prerequisite courses in algebra, human anatomy, physics, physiology, psychology and medical terminology are required, as are coursework in English, speech or oral and written communications. Students are expected to be able to communicate effectively in English.

As part of the core curriculum, students will study sonographic physics and learn how high frequency sound waves of the heart are produced and the best way to generate the best quality images. Scanning for congenital heart disease and commonly seen congenital heart defects as well as more complex defects and their management is also taught.
Other classes cover pathology and function of the adult heart, and some schools in Hawaii also offer classes in the neonatal, infant and the child’s heart as well. A clinical rotation is also a required part of the curriculum.

While not a requirement, many graduates choose to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) examinations for sonography principles and instrumentation and adult echocardiography.
