Midwifery Programs in Delaware

Midwifery School in Delaware - DE

According to the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) (who are registered nurses with additional graduate training in midwifery) have practiced in Delaware for the past two decades. The state’s first nurse-midwifery practice opened in Wilmington in 1982. Although currently, no midwifery schools exist in Delaware, there are 43 schools across the United States that are accredited by the ACNM, many of which offer online, distance-learning options.

Delaware students interested in midwife programs have the option of attending midwife schools in other states or even online schools and distance education alternatives. If you want to become a CNM, you must first become a registered nurse, then complete graduate midwifery courses. If you opt to become a direct-entry midwife, you do not need nursing training, but must still complete a midwifery program of education. Both types of midwives are schooled in prenatal and postnatal health of the mother and newborn care as well. Either option is viable for students in Delaware interested in midwifery as a career; however, keep in mind that, under state statutes, insurance policies are not required to reimburse direct-entry midwives for services but must reimburse CNMs for their services.
