While only a high school diploma or its equivalent is required to become a certified personal trainer, some employers want more. In fact, if you want to become a professional member of the ACSM, you must have a bachelor, master or doctoral degree in a field related to health, physical education or exercise science. Alternatively, those who have at least a bachelor’s degree in other areas but who currently work in the health field are also eligible. The ACSM also offers an alliance membership that is ideal for students or other people who are interested in health and fitness issues.
ACSM requires that personal trainers are recertified every three years. The recertification fee is $30.00. Personal trainers must complete 45 hours of continuing education classes which are approved by ACSM. Most recertification applicants end up spending a total of $800.00 to $1000.00 for their continuing education classes and the recertification fee
