How to Become a Personal Trainer in Delaware

The profession of personal training is not specifically regulated by the state of Delaware, meaning that you do not need to apply for any type of licensure or registration with the state.  Specific employers, however, will require certification from a national certifying agency after completion of an online program or after graduating from personal trainer courses in Delaware.  There are many national certifying agencies for personal trainers in Delaware, so you may want to consult your potential employers in order to find out which certification(s) they may require.

In addition, a national certification will help to increase the marketability and overall credibility for the personal trainer.  While there are several certifications that the personal trainer can pursue, the national certifying agencies that are certified by the NCCA, or National Commission for Certifying Agencies, are generally recognized as the most credible.  The NCCA is an organization committed to protection of the public through the accreditation of programs that assess professional competency.

In general, certification will require a combination of educational and field training experience.  In addition, certification will also require that the personal trainer complete continuing education on a yearly basis in order to maintain the certification.  While there are several certifications available for personal trainers, some of the more common certifications are Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Personal Fitness Trainer (PFT).

In Delaware, there are specific tax laws pertaining to sales and use taxes on health and athletic club services.  Consult the State of Delaware Department of Revenue Services for more information.

Continuing Education Requirements for Personal Trainers in Delaware

Because the profession of personal training is not regulated by the state of Delaware, there are no specific requirements for continuing education mandated by the state.  If you choose, however, to pursue certification by a national certification agency, consult that agency for continuing education reporting requirements in order to maintain that certification.
Continuing education is exceptionally important to the personal trainer.  The field of exercise science is relatively young, and as such, the body of knowledge in the field continues to grow at a rapid pace.  In addition, due to the growth of the industry, new products and techniques are consistently entering into the marketplace, requiring consistent continuing education in order to provide the client with the most effective fitness experience.  The best, most effective personal trainers are those who are able to utilize both the expanding knowledge base of exercise science, and combine that with strong interpersonal and motivational skills.
