First you should have completed your high school education. The general education you receive in high school is an incredibly important foundation for any future educational pursuits so if you are still in high school take the opportunity to learn as much as possible and be immersed in strong foundational courses like biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.

Due to the nature of the work you may not be able to job shadow a practicing professional but you could work as a radiologic assistant or volunteer in an environment where you will be immersed in the profession in some way. Having a practical view of the type of work a practicing professional will do on a daily basis will help you determine if this is a good career choice for you.

After successfully completing the educational and clinical portions of your Delaware ultrasound technician training you will then be eligible to apply for the national registration examination. You will have to pay a fee in order to be registered and must pass the basic physics and radiation testing in order to be recognized as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. Each additionally specialty test you take will simply open the opportunities you will have in being employed as an ultrasound tech. Some of the specialties require further education and others do not.

In the state of Delaware the laws also state that you must specifically be certified to work with ionizing radiation and the public. Finally you must have CPR certification that is up-to-date in order work in any public health profession in Delaware.

After completing the testing, paying necessary fees for both your license and radiation certification you are ready to look for a job as a radiology technologist. Your registration as a radiologic tech is permanent in the state of Delaware as long as you pay the yearly renewal fees and keep your continuing education requirements current.
