The state of Montana does not have nearly as many dental assistants and dental hygienists as other states. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics there are only 700 registered dental hygienists in Montana. However, there is expected to be growth in this field, even in less populated states like Montana.

Steps to Becoming a Dental Hygienist in Montana

Dental hygienists must complete a dental hygiene program. Most programs take around two years to complete, while some can take up to four. Dental hygiene programs will consist of more math and science courses, as well as an array of courses in dental materials and practices. Hands-on experience, where knowledge can be put into action, is also a part of all dental hygiene programs. There are a few dental hygienist schools in Montana.

Montana Dental Hygienist Continuing Education Requirements

Dental hygienists in Montana have unique renewal requirements in that they are one of only a handful of states that requires annual renewal. Dental hygienists can renew their license to practice dental hygiene from January 1st to March 1st. Late renewal can be done online through April 15th.

In addition to renewing their license on a yearly basis, Montana dental hygienists must complete 36 credit hours of continuing education every three years. They must also keep their CPR/ACLS/PALS credentials current.
