Although a formal education is not required for some entry-level dental assistant positions in Florida, if your goal is to become a registered dental assistant (RDA) so as to have “expanded functions�?, a dental assistant certificate is required. There are a number of dental assistant schools in Florida. Typically these programs last anywhere between nine and twelve months and include 1,230 hours of class time and training.

If a career as a dental assistant is your professional goal, it is best to take as many science oriented courses in high school as possible. Upon graduation, enroll in an approved dental assistant certificate program. Graduating from a formal training program will provide a competitive edge and make you more marketable in Florida’s competitive job market.
