Respiratory Therapy Programs in Florida - FL

The only states that do not require licensure for respiratory therapists are Alaska and Hawaii so those seeking employment in Florida must complete one of two paths of education. One may either obtain a two-year associates degree or a four-year college or university program resulting in a baccalaureate’s degree. These degrees often include a core of “pre-med? type courses such as anatomy, biology, physiology and cardiopulmonary pathology. Also, since respiratory therapists will interact directly with patients, many programs also include coursework in psychology. There are a variety of Florida respiratory therapist schools, as well as online university options available.

In Florida, many baccalaureate programs entitle students to specific certificates of completion allowing students to apply for the entry level and/or advanced practitioner credentialing exams. While these advanced degrees or credentials certainly aren’t required, they will likely lead to increased responsibilities and salaries. Possible areas of specialties to consider include:

  • Pediatric or neonatal respiratory therapist
  • Geriatric respiratory therapist
  • Sleep disorder specialists

For those less interested in working in a hospital setting, they may choose a specialty that gives them the opportunity to work in respiratory research, diagnostics, extended care facilities or even as a salesperson for a respiratory equipment manufacturer. Currently, there are 18 Associates Degree programs and two Bachelor’s Degree programs available in the state of Florida

Through campus or online programs, aspiring Respiratory Therapists in Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, St. Petersburg and Orlando, Florida may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Baptist Medical Center, Memorial Regional Hospital, Mount Sinai Medical Center, University Hospital and Medical Center and Broward General Medical Center.
