Health Informatics Degree in Massachusetts - MA

The profession of health information management has become an important, crucial profession within the Massachusetts health care system. As the importance of medical records increases, so does the need for sophisticated technology to track them.  This creates a need for highly trained individuals to handle and administer these records. There are a number of medical informatics programs in Massachusetts available to aid students in health informatics training.

While you are training to become an RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), you will be studying either for a bachelor degree or certificate (if you already possess an associate degree in healthcare informatics). Some of the health informatics courses you may encounter during your training in Massachusetts include Introduction to the Study of Human Disease, Medical Terminology, Classification, Billing and Reimbursement, Organization of Medical Records, Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, and Healthcare Informatics. Most certificate programs (for those with an associate degree) take about two years to complete. A bachelor degree program typically takes about four years to complete. Many times, placement for a college internship is available in Massachusetts area medical facilities, including Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston; Milton Hospital in Milton; and Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. After graduation, you may apply to take the RHIA examination, which is 180 questions and takes approximately four hours to complete.
