A September 2010 government report stated that, rural healthcare facilities working to convert their paper-based medical records to electronic health record (EHR) technology will receive nearly $20 million to do so. This may be good news for the Louisiana student who is seeking certification as a Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT). These funds will increase the availability of jobs as more organizations convert to electronic records. Becoming a certified RHIT will not only increase your chances of being selected for one of these jobs, it will also increase your yearly earnings.

As an RHIT candidate, the certification program will require you to have the necessary skills to will work with all parties involved in a patients healthcare. This includes insurance companies, government agencies, medical facilities, and health care providers. You will also need extensive computer software and technology skills as healthcare facilities are encouraged to continue to implement electronic health records (EHR) in their daily operations. The RHIT credential is awarded to the student who completes an accredited associate degree program and passes an examination. The Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT) certification in Louisiana is offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
