Herbalist Certification in Hawaii - HI

Herbalist certification in Hawaii can take multiple forms. Highly educated herbalists may seek voluntary certification from one of several organizations. The American Herbalists Guild is the primary certifying agency in the United States. It is a well respected organization that accepts members from all herbal traditions based on a review of credentials.

Certification is contingent on fulfilling minimum training hours in a variety of field-related topics. Other rigorous requirements include the following:

  • Four years of education and experience
  • Letters of reference from those in the field
  • Submission of three successful case reviews

The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is the certifying agency for Oriental medicine, comprising both acupuncture and traditional Chinese herbology.  To be certified by NCCAOM, one must graduate from an accredited school and pass a certifying exam.

The National Institute of Medical Herbalists can be another excellent professional resource for herbalists who have master’s level training.  Though based in the United Kingdom, NIMH does have members from countries around the word.  NIMH accepts bachelor’s level candidates from a little number of accredited schools. One advantage to NIMH membership is that it signals to clients that one not only possesses a high level of education, but also can be trusted to deliver services with the highest professional and ethical standards.
