Herbalist Certification in Tennessee - TN

Herbal Medicine Degrees in Tennessee

If individuals want to specialize within the field of herbalism, then they can concentrate their studies in their area of interest to earn herbalist certification in Tennessee.  This will position them as experts who have a deep understanding of specific aspects of the discipline.  Individuals may opt to pursue various types of certification such as:

  • family herbal medicine to focus on herbal remedies and emphasizes client-herbalist communication;
  • Chinese herbal medicine to focus on the preparation of herbal medications and/or the implementation of therapeutic techniques; and
  • master herbal medicine to focus on integrating both modern and traditional herbal medical practices into daily activities such as cooking.

There is official herbalist licensure neither in Tennessee nor in any part of the country, but practitioners can pursue voluntary credentials through the American Herbalist Guild (AHG).  To qualify for membership in this organization, individuals must have:

  • approximately four years of herbal training;
  • hands-on clinical experience;
  • letters of reference;
  • a passing score on the AHG examination; and
  • ongoing enrollment in continuing education courses.

If individuals meet these criteria, then they may designate “Herbalist AHG? following their names to demonstrate their accreditation.

In addition, herbalists can pursue membership in the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH), the nation’s oldest professional group dedicated to the practice of medical herbalism.  Because membership mandates passing an examination and adherence to other strict requirements, herbalists can reference their inclusion on the NIMH register as verification of their knowledge and skills.
